Energy Star & Energy Tax Rebates

Energy Star Ratings & Federal Tax Rebates

Energy Star is a federally-supported rating system for energy efficient products ranging from washing machines to roofing materials.   The department also offers tax rebates in conjunction with purchasing some of these products.

We encourage you to ask a Raindrop Roofing N.W. team member about Energy Star-rated roofing materials that will work for your home.  But, if you'd like to review the full list yourself Energy Star publishes a full list of roofing products.

As of mid-2010, here's are tax incentives available:

Roofing Types: Metal and asphalt roofs using Energy Star-rated roofing materials
Tax Credit: Up to 30% of cost of roofing materials, Limited at $1500
Expires December 31, 2010 
Restrictions: Must be an existing home and your principal residence.  Rentals and vacation homes do not quality.

Roofing Type: Photovoltaic shingles
Tax Credit: 30% of cost of roofing materials with no upper limit
Expires: December 31, 2016
Restrictions: Existing homes & new construction qualify. Both principal and second homes qualify. Rentals do not qualify. Shingle must provide electricity to the residence.

Oregon and Energy Trust Residential Tax Credits

Oregon doesn't offer tax credits specifically for residential roofing.  However, they do offer tax credits for replacing or increasing insulation and solar electric.

Professionally Installed Insulation Tax Credit

State of Oregon Residential Energy Tax Credit: $3.00/watt, up to $6,000 per solar electric system per home. A maximum of $1,500 of tax credit can be claimed per year as of mid-2010.

LEED Points for Residential Buildings

The U.S. Green Building Council developed the LEED certification and rating system to reward and recognize sustainable building practices from design through to operation.  Points are awarded based on where materials were created, amount of recycled material within the product, and energy efficiency after installation. LEED is more common for commercial buildings, but is gaining popularity with homeowners and residential builders.

CertainTeed LEED for Residential Homes

CertainTeed's Landmark Solaris shingles are both LEED and Energy Star-rated.  They also meet Energy Star standards for solar reflectance and thermal emissivity.

Pabco shingles are produced in the Pacific Northwest.  According to their website, they PABCO® Roofing Products may help contribute to meeting LEED requirements in Materials & Resource - Recycled Content (4.1 and 4.2) and Regional Materials (5.1 and 5.2).
